THE GUAM MEDICAL RESIDENCY PROGRAM SUMMARY

Guam Memorial Hospital is the recipient of a grant from the Administration for Native Americans (ANA) to conduct a three-year program (through September 30, 2007) of one-month residency rotations, with the ultimate objectives of

  1. recruiting physicians to Guam
  2. establishing a self sustaining medical elective rotation program and
  3. ultimately developing a full residency program for the region.

With the Administration for Native Americans as its source, the program primarily targets persons native to Guam and American Pacific Islanders. However, the program does allow for participation by non-native persons, should they be interested in practicing on Guam, or exploring the opportunity of doing so through an elective rotation.

All participants receive one-on-one assistance with their orientation to Guam and the hospital, and report directly to the Medical Director through an assigned attending physician. Rotation opportunities are available in emergency medicine, OB/GYN, general surgery, orthopedic surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, pathology, and a variety of other disciplines. As part of the program, the resident is introduced to the Suruhanu or ancient holistic medicinal practices of Guam as part of retaining this important aspect of the island.s native Chamorro culture. This aspect of the program is coordinated through the accredited University of Guam and its Health Leaders Today for Tomorrow.s Excellence (HLTTE) program.

Selected participants receive:

  • Up to $1,070.00 for airfare
  • A $1,200 stipend for the month long rotation
  • Comfortable living quarters
  • Complimentary meals from the Guam Memorial Hospital cafeteria during working hours

Participants are expected to:

  • Complete 8 hour shifts as assigned
  • Assist with call responsibilities, if needed
  • Maintain communications availability with the hospital via equipment provided by GMH
  • Complete reports for the patient care they deliver to meet requirements of the grant
  • Obtain completed evaluations from the attending physicians with whom they work
  • Complete an individual evaluation of the overall program prior to exiting the rotation

In compliance with this federal grant, selection preference is provided for medical residents of native Chamorro descent to provide local physicians an opportunity to return to Guam. However, all qualified medical residents are eligible to apply. 100% of costs for this program are provided by the United States Federal Government Administration for Native Americans.
