4th Annual CHamoru Language Competition
Middle and high school students in Guam and the Northern Marianas are again gearing up for the 4th Annual CHamoru Language Competition sponsored by the Chamorro Language Program of the University of Guam's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
Event organizer, Professor Peter R. Onedera announced that the annual event will be held on the university's annual Charter Day celebration on Tuesday, March 13, 2007. The theme is I FINO' CHAMORU: I Finaloffan-na yan I Mamaila'-na and will feature the following genres:
- Middle Schools
- (individual) oratorical, poetry recitation and essay;
- (group) choral reading and chant.
- High Schools
- (individual) oratorical, poetry recitation, proficiency, and male/female singing;
- (group) song with dance or dance with song and dramatic cultural presentation (play).
"All genres of the competition will be presented in the CHamoru language throughout the day", says Onedera. The competition begins at 8am and will end with an awards ceremony at 4pm on the day of the comepetition. Those wishing to participate can e-mail Onedera at onedera@uog9.uog.edu. A call for members interested in joining the judging panel has been issued. Anyone interested must be proficient in reading, writing and speaking CHamoru.
