Pacific Islanders in Communications 2005 Scholarship Awardees


Angela Sablan

Angela Sablan, born in Guam, is a senior at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Angela is majoring in Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations. "I would like to be a role model and part of an encouraging team of Pacific Islanders in the exploration of the field of Communications," she says. Upon graduation, Angela plans to embark on a career that would allow her to manage educational programs for Pacific Island students. She plans to shadow communication professionals in order to learn more about media and communications.


Hotavia Gingerlei Porter

Hotavia Gingerlei Porter, born in American Samoa, received her Bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa in 2003. She is currently seeking a Masters of Communications degree with an emphasis in Information and Communication Technologies. She wants to use her education and work with the Telecommunications and Information Policy Group to bridge the gap between American Samoa and the Northern Marianas Islands. Hotavia had previously worked with this group in the distance-learning program utilizing Satellite technology (PEACESAT). Hotavia offers, "Through (my) education and career focus, I hope to contribute in the development of distance education programs for cultural enrichment in American Samoa."


Kapi'olani Lee

Kapi'olani Lee, of Hawaiian ancestry, was born in Seattle, Washington. She is pursuing a Masters of Fine Arts degree from San Francisco State University. Kapi'olani received her Bachelor's degree in 2002 from the University of Washington, double majoring in Visual Arts and Ethnic Studies. She states that as a "working filmmaker," she will "create and develop fiction films structured around historical and contemporary Pacific Islander experiences." Kapi'olani plans to complete her M.F.A. in 2008.


Kevin Ka'ahanui

Kevin Ka'ahanui, of Ho'olehua, Moloka'i and a graduate of Moloka'i high school, is working towards his undergraduate degree from Menlo College in California with a declared major of Digital Media, emphasizing in Video Production. Kevin's interest in filmmaking sparked when he enrolled in an afterschool video production course concentrating on Native Hawaiian stories through media. "My career goal is to become a Hollywood movie producer and make movies about indigenous people's legends," he states. To gain additional experience in the field, Kevin has worked as an intern at Akaku Community Television.


Tanya Oscar

Tanya Oscar, born in Pohnpei, FSM, attends Northern Marianas College in Saipan where she is seeking an Associate of Arts degree in Film and Television and Business Management. Tanya, a single mother of two young children, has achieved academic success with her Film and Video classes. Tanya's grades clearly reflect a student that has found her niche and a passion for telling stories through film and video. Ramon Basa, Director of Admissions, Records, and Financial Aid, wrote that Tonya is "hard working and diligent, a fast-learner (that) gets things done (in) a timely, efficient fashion."


Sophia Suda

Sophia Suda, born in Saipan, CNMI, is pursuing an Associate in Arts degree from Northern Marianas College (NMC) in Saipan. Sophia will be in her sophomore year this Fall. Butch Wolfe and Greg Curda, from the Department of Film and Television Arts Department at NMC, both gave Sophia high recommendations upon her completion of Recording Engineering and Advance Post-Production courses. Sophia achieved an impressive cumulative grade point average during her first year at NMC, which exemplifies a desire to excel in the medium of television. In the future, Sophia hopes to start her own theatre or production company in Saipan to serve her people.
