This message came to Chamorro.com via email from Sharon Fujimoto-Johnson. Please read her letter below.

I came across your web site and thought that you might be interested in a book that has just been published about the Battle of Saipan.

"Rainbow Over Hell" is the true story of a young civilian named Saburo Arakaki who stood on Suicide Cliff during the Battle of Saipan and who against all odds survived the war. He later joined Captain Oba's Company and became one of the men in this historic final group of Japanese stragglers to surrender on Saipan. Arakaki also has the distinction of being sentenced to death and then eventually receiving full Presidential pardon. Today, he is a retired Christian minister in Okinawa, Japan.

"Rainbow Over Hell" was originally written in Japanese by award-winning author Tsuneyuki Mohri, and I had the privilege of translating it into English. There are still too few accounts of what happened during this horrific battle, and Saburo Arakaki's story is ultimately one of hope and forgivness. The book impacted many Japanese readers, and I'm thankful that it is now available in English. I'm hoping that some of the courageous men who fought in this battle--on either side--will have the opportunity to read this book.

More info on "Rainbow Over Hell" and ordering can be found at its web site: http://rainbowoverhell.com. It is currently only available from an independent bookseller, but it will soon also be available from Amazon.com.

Sincerely,

Sharon Fujimoto-Johnson
Translator, Rainbow Over Hell
