Marianas Tao Tao Tano Club

We the students of the Marianas Taotao Tano Club of Seattle University recognize the importance of preserving, celebrating, and sharing cultural identity. Taotao Tano (people of the land) reflects our pride and commitment to our culture and our islands, to serve and give back to the land from which we come. It is the mission of this organization to uphold these values not only in the Mariana Islands but here in the Seattle Community. In doing so, we strive to create a family--a home away from home. "POKSAI CHamorro" of Marianas High School - Saipan

POKSAI CHamorro means raised as a CHamorro but in our terms it all means P-Protehi O-Onra K-Kutturan S-Saipan A-Ataha I-Inasan CHamorro... by all means to protect and honor the culture of Saipan and to help prevent the current washing away of the culture of the CHamorro.

The POLKSAI CHamorro Club is a school-based student club founded in 2004. It is aimed at promoting the preservation of the CHamorro culture, most especially the language. This is a different angle compared to other existing groups who are more focused into the dances or arts.

The club's main goal is the creation and promotion of programs and activities aimed at the preservation of the CHamorro Language. The Club participates annually in the CHamorro Language Competition sponsored by the University of Guam. Last year, the Club took 3 gold medals and 2 silver medals in the 5 areas of competition in Guam. This year we will once again be participating in the Guam event.

Other activities held by the Club are; cultural sports competition at school, Christmas Caroling, singing CHamorro songs, to the Man'amko, the sick, the youth, and the incarcerated, the production of children's short story books, the translations and composing of numerous poems and short skits/dialogues, and assisting in the Elementary Level CHamorro Language competition on island.

Our main objective for 2006 is in the production of a children's television program in CHamorro to be aired locally. These are just some of what the Club does and aims to do.

"Famoksaiyan" translates to either "the place or time of nurturing" or "the time to paddle forward and move ahead." We are a grassroots network of activists, scholars, students, community leaders and artists who seek to push a progressive political, economic and social agenda for Chamorros and their communities at the local, national and international levels, through the promotion of the work of decolonization and cultural/historical revitalization in their politics, creative endeavors and everyday interactions.

Famoksaiyan has organized several national conferences in San Diego and San Francisco, organized multiple delegations of Chamorros who have traveled to the United Nations to testify on the current status of Guam, and in 2009 won the Agape Peace prize.
