Hoi
Thanks so much for signing our guest book. It's really a great feeling
knowing you are enjoying the hard work Benny (the web master of
Kanton Tasi and Talayero Tales) has been doing to make this a wonderful
site for all islanders and friends to enjoy! We really do appreciate the
guest book entries!
Have you ever wondered about the secret hiding places of the ancient and
not so ancient Chamorro's? Allot of people are mystified about how the
Chamorro's were experts in covert manipulation. If you really think about
this most perplexing issue it's not really hard to figure out.
If you were fortunate enough to grow up on the island of Guahan in the
sixties and seventies, chances are you would have seen where the older
ladies hid their money. You know what I am talking about. They used to hide
their money in a handkerchief or napkin and stick it into their bra. When
an unsuspecting grandchild would open up their purses for candy money, none
could be found. This is also the main reason why there was not very many
purse-snatchers back in the older days.
It was not difficult being a stealth thief back then. All the neighbors
knew the doors and windows to your home were unlocked. What kind of
challenge was it to enter an unlocked, unoccupied house anyway? Breaking
and entering a home was almost unheard of back then. The only legal
"literal" way a person could burglarize a home was by asking to borrow that
family for their most treasured belongings i.e. their Tupperware and new 20
inch lawn mower.
In today's justice a person must go to court to get back his belongings. In
olden Guam this will be a likely scenario for the return of a particular
item: Owner: Juan, borrow me fan back my lawn mower. Juan: oh, I'll let
you borrow your lawn mower but I need it back tomorrow okay? Owner: shoot
(yes!)
The furniture of old was also full of nice surprises. The olden day armoire
had secret drawers known only to the keen eyed and knowledgeable. It was a
matter of time before us kids figured it out.
Island kids were at a terrible disadvantage in the old days. It was very
difficult to be mischievous with out your parents knowing everything you
did. I recalled taking a motorcycle joyride with my two sisters at age 5
only to find out that my Mom already knew of our little escapade before
even coming home. Umbre lai.. Cause of the neighbors and relatives passing
by. This will attest to the fact that Chamorro's were the first in rapid
reporting of news. Therefore I conclude that CNN really stands for Chamorro
News Network and CBS stands for Chamorro Broad Casting System.
So you see, most people find it difficult to understand the simple
mysteries of our beloved little island. I
just opened your eyes to some reasons why it's not all that puzzling!
And oh….. borrow me fan your new Chamorro Laser Disk! Ai adai!
